The Correct Usage of Material Safety Data Sheets

Material Safety Data Sheets or MSDS’ are used to help protect employees and workers at their workplaces. If you work at a job that frequently exposes you to cleaning products and other potentially harmful chemicals, then you should be well aware of the substances you are dealing with and how to handle it well. All of this information will be stored in an MSDS that should be freely available to all workers.

It is very important to know how to use and organize an MSDS. There are many sections within this book that you should be aware of. Each cleaning agent or chemical product should be correctly identified and the book should contain all the ingredients, health hazards, reactivity data and special emergency procedures. Knowing all of this will help you save time and many lives in the case of an emergency. The book should also list the different names of the chemicals that are unsafe. Anything that you should ideally know about these products should be listed in the book.

OSHA requires these MSDS books to be present at every workplace as a safety measure. Anything that may be hazardous or potentially hazardous should be listed here. Anything that may cause harm to the body and chemicals that may cause irritation and damage to the skin, eyes, lungs, etc. are all considered hazardous.

Material Safety Data Sheets should also contain the following information:
  • Proper safety precautions to be used when handling chemicals.
  • The use of protective equipment like ventilators and clothing.
  • Proper disposal measures.
  • Basic first aid.
  • Storage Information.
  • Information on whether the product is corrosive, explosive or flammable.
